CBTU International President Terry Melvin co-chaired the Labor Breakfast yesterday at the opening of the 54th Annual Legislative Conference of the Congressional Black Caucus in Washington, DC. Numerous national labor leaders spoke about the unprecedented attacks on Black workers and the African American community and how unions are fighting back.
Congressional leaders, including Rep. Bobby Scott (D-Va), who is the ranking Member of the Committee on Education and Workforce, offered strong support for the legislative agenda put forth Black labor. President Melvin announced CBTU will participate in a follow-up strategy session with CBC members on October 28 to adopt a plan to protect Black working families,
CBTU also distributed a special report to caucus members that highlighted the dire situation of Black workers in the current labor market. The report, entitled "State of Black WorkLife in America," concluded "Black Americans have arrived at the doorstep of a Trump recession," with worse to come with massive cuts to Medicaid, education and health care."
